What is an apostille in Singapore — and how the apostille process actually works
An apostille is a certificate that proves your Singapore document is genuine, so another country will accept it. Since Singapore joined the Hague Apostille Convention on 16 September 2021, the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) is the only authority that issues them — and we take your document through every step to get there.
Apostille, authentication or embassy legalisation in Singapore — which one do you actually need?
These three words get mixed up constantly, and picking the wrong one wastes time and money. Here’s the plain-English difference — and if you’re unsure, just tell us the destination country and we’ll confirm.
Notarisation
A Notary Public verifies and certifies your document first. Required for private documents before any apostille.
Apostille
A single SAL certificate that makes your document valid in any Hague Convention country — no embassy needed.
Embassy legalisation
For countries outside the Convention, an extra step: the destination’s embassy or consulate legalises it too.
Does your destination country need a Singapore apostille or full embassy legalisation?
Everything hinges on whether your destination is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. We hold the current list and confirm your exact route before you spend a cent.
โ Hague member → apostille only
- Covers 120+ countries — the UK, India, Australia, the USA, China and most of Europe.
- One SAL apostille is enough — no embassy step.
- Faster, simpler and cheaper.
๐ Non-Hague → full legalisation
- Some Middle East and other countries aren’t members.
- Needs notarisation, SAL, MFA and the embassy/consulate.
- We handle the whole chain so you don’t chase counters.

Government vs private documents — which need notarisation before the SAL apostille
Not every document takes the same route to an apostille, and getting this wrong is the most common reason people are turned away at the counter. We sort it in one message:
- Singapore government documents — birth, marriage, ACRA and court documents can be apostilled by the SAL directly, no notarisation.
- Private documents — a POA, declaration, degree copy or company paper must be notarised first, then the SAL apostilles it.
- Originals only — the SAL needs originals; laminated documents need a fresh certified copy from the issuer.

e-Apostille Singapore — the new digital apostille for ACRA & public documents
From 2025, the SAL issues a digital e-Apostille for eligible documents — a verifiable electronic certificate emailed within minutes instead of days. The first documents covered are ACRA business profiles and certificates, with more public documents to follow.
For businesses expanding overseas, that means faster company documents with less waiting. We’ll tell you whether your document qualifies for an e-Apostille or needs the physical certificate.
Ask about e-Apostille →e-Apostille vs physical
- e-Apostille — digital, emailed in minutes; currently for ACRA & select public documents.
- Physical apostille — affixed to the paper document; used for notarised and other documents.
- We advise — some overseas recipients still ask for a physical apostille; we confirm before you commit.

Apostille Singapore FAQs — everything people ask before apostilling documents
An apostille is a certificate that proves your Singapore document is genuine so another country will accept it. If you’re using a document abroad — for a job, university, visa, marriage or business — the foreign authority usually needs it apostilled (for Hague Convention countries) or legalised through an embassy (for others). We confirm which applies to you.
Send us the document and the destination country. If it’s a private document we notarise it first; if it’s a Singapore government document the SAL can apostille it directly. We then submit to the Singapore Academy of Law — the sole authority for apostilles — and, for non-Hague countries, arrange embassy legalisation. Finally we courier the finished document back to you.
The SAL charges a fixed fee: from S$10.70 for a government document that doesn’t need notarising, or S$87.20 for a private document after notarisation. Add notary fees (from S$40 plus a S$75 notarial certificate) for private documents, and embassy fees for non-Hague countries. So an apostilled degree is typically from about S$162.20 all-in. We confirm your exact price upfront.
Over 120 countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention — including the UK, India, Australia, the USA, China and most of Europe. For these, one SAL apostille is enough. Countries outside the Convention need full embassy legalisation, which we also handle.
It depends on the document. Singapore government documents such as birth and marriage certificates, court documents and ACRA records can be apostilled by the SAL directly. Private documents — powers of attorney, declarations, degree copies, company papers — must be notarised by a Notary Public first. We’ll tell you which route yours takes.
An e-Apostille is a digital, verifiable apostille the SAL introduced in 2025, emailed within minutes rather than issued on paper over days. It currently covers ACRA business profiles and certificates, with more public documents to follow. We’ll tell you if your document qualifies, and whether your overseas recipient will accept the digital version.
Yes — these are two of the most common requests. We notarise where needed, obtain the SAL apostille, add embassy legalisation for non-Hague destinations, and arrange certified translation if the employer requires it. Tell us the country and your start date and we’ll work to your deadline.
Often yes. For eligible ACRA and public documents an e-Apostille can be issued in minutes, and we can fast-track notarisation and SAL submission for urgent cases. Embassy legalisation for non-Hague countries takes longer. Message us your deadline and we’ll tell you honestly what’s possible.
No. You can appoint us to handle the SAL submission on your behalf, so you avoid the trip and the queue at Coleman Street. We can collect your originals and courier the finished, apostilled documents back to you anywhere in Singapore.
